The Post Dinner Session Part 2 – Mixed Case #23
A Second Helping of Shenanigans in a Glass
Welcome back to the land of soft candlelight, unbuttoned waistbands, and stories that spiral into legend. You’ve eaten well. You’ve toasted once (or thrice). But the clock says “linger” — and this trio of wines says, “go on, make it a night.”
Part 2 of our wildly irresponsible post-dinner series is here, and it’s bringing a touch of sparkle, a chill white with secrets, and a red that purrs rather than roars. Perfect for after dessert… or instead of dessert. We’re not judging.
1. Hidden Valley Brut 2020 (Méthode Cap Classique)
Stellenbosch, South Africa
Varietals
Chardonnay 50% & Pinot Noir 50%
Nose
Lemon meringue, crisp green apple, and warm toast fresh from the fancy oven
Palate
Creamy mousse, tight bubbles, and a citrus zing that politely wakes up your palate before tucking it in with a buttery blanket. Dry, refined, and dangerously sociable
Ageing Potential
3–5 years… or right now because someone just brought out the truffles
Food Pairing
Savoury canapés, salty crisps, or simply sipped while debating who really won the evening.
2. Daschbosch ‘The Mill’ Cinsault 2023
Breedekloof, South Africa
Varietal
100% Cinsault (a.k.a. the Pinot Noir of the Swartland, with a better sense of humour)
Nose
Raspberries, rose petals, and a whisper of spice — like if your picnic flirtation wrote you a poem
Palate
Light-bodied and vibrant with juicy red fruit, herbal lift, and a cheeky wink of earthiness. It’s the ultimate fireside red: low in tannins, high in charm. Serve slightly chilled and slightly irresponsibly
Ageing Potential
2–4 years, but honestly, it’s already perfect in its youth (just like you)
Food Pairing
Charcuterie, hard cheeses, or those mysterious fridge leftovers that suddenly feel very French.
3. Jordan Outlier 2024 (Barrel-Fermented Sauvignon Blanc)
Stellenbosch, South Africa
Varietal
100% Sauvignon Blanc
Nose
Grilled pineapple, lemongrass, and crème brûlée served at a seaside jazz club
Palate
Rich, textured, and round with bright acidity and a creamy oak undertone. It’s what happens when your crisp white takes a sabbatical and comes back wearing linen and speaking softly about balance
Ageing Potential
5–6 years, but it’s already dangerously good at pretending it’s mature
Food Pairing
Buttery roast chicken, creamy mushroom anything, or a philosophical discussion over lemon tart.
Why You’ll Love It
Mixed Case #23 – Post Dinner Session Part 2 is for those who believe that the best part of dinner happens after the plates are cleared. From bubbles that bring new life to the table, to a white that moonlights as a thought-piece, to a red that sings lullabies to your palate — this is the late-night jazz trio of wine selections. Warning: May result in a second cheese board, deep confessions, and “accidentally” planning a road trip.
