Syrah Selection #1

A Cape Noir Cabaret in Three Acts

Ladies and gentlemen, lovers of luscious reds and secret late-night wine rack raids — welcome to the dark and delicious drama of Syrah (also known by its sultry stage name, Shiraz). This is not a collection for the faint of palate. No, this is for those who like their wines with plot twists, stormy eyes, and a hint of black pepper intrigue.

These three bottles are a masterclass in Syrah seduction, each one strutting out of the Cape with spice, swagger, and enough depth to drown a philosopher.

The Selection

1. Constitution Road Shiraz 2021

Robertson, South Africa

Varietal

100% Shiraz

Nose

An opera of ripe blackberries, exotic spice markets, and smoky whispers from a distant bonfire. Think incense, plums, and maybe just a hint of leather boots and mischief.

Palate

A full-bodied velvet tsunami. Rich with dark fruit, mocha, toasty oak and a long, dramatic finish that deserves a standing ovation. The tannins are bold, the structure is serious — but it’s still got a twinkle in its eye.

Ageing Potential

8–10 years (or until your dream of owning a vineyard materializes).

Food Pairing

Slow-cooked short ribs, chargrilled aubergines, or spicy chocolate mole — yes, really.

2. Olifantsberg Syrah 2019

Breedekloof, South Africa

Varietals

100% Syrah

Nose

Blueberries, violets, black olives, and a eucalyptus breeze sweeping through a sunbaked Mediterranean herb garden. This wine has travelled emotionally.

Palate

A more refined, slightly wild Syrah with bright acidity and fine tannins. Notes of cranberry, white pepper, and a whisper of savoury earthiness — like it just came back from yoga and smells faintly of sage.

Ageing Potential

5–7 years, or whenever the braai gods demand.

Food Pairing

Lamb koftas, lentil and mushroom bolognese, or grilled boerewors with a sense of purpose.

3. Muratie ‘Ronnie Melck’ Shiraz 2019

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Varietal

100% Shiraz

Nose

A symphony of ripe cherries, black pepper, smoky bacon, and nostalgia. If old leather books and warm spice had a baby, it’d smell like this.

Palate

Generous, rustic charm with dark fruit, hints of savoury charcuterie, and a silky-smooth texture that hums with history. There’s soul here — and the ghosts of good dinners past.

Ageing Potential

6–9 years, but absolutely worth opening now with a tear in your eye and a fork in your hand.

Food Pairing

Venison pie, charred beetroot with goat cheese, or anything served in candlelight with too much enthusiasm.

Why You’ll Love It

This isn’t just a wine selection — it’s a moody Syrah séance. Expect spice, soul, and a swirl of storytelling in every bottle. Perfect for the firelit evenings, philosophical debates, or when your pasta needs more drama.

Caution: May lead to passionate speeches about terroir and impromptu meatball-making.
