July Red Edition 2026
Paisley Bear Wine Club July 2026 Red Edition (6 bottles)
Six remarkable South African reds. One beautifully balanced winter collection.
If there’s one thing we’ve learnt about a Cape Town July, it’s to expect the unexpected.
One weekend calls for a roaring fire, lamb shanks and red wine that warms you from the inside out. The next, you’re braaiing in a T-shirt wondering whether winter accidentally skipped town.
Fortunately, our Paisley Bear Wine Club July 2026 Red Edition is prepared for both.
This month’s collection is built around balance. Elegant enough for an unexpectedly warm afternoon, yet structured enough for slow-cooked winter comfort food. It brings together six outstanding wines from some of South Africa’s most exciting producers, each contributing its own personality while creating a collection that’s wonderfully complete.
Whether you’re introducing friends to something new or simply treating yourself after another week of pretending to enjoy Cape Town traffic, these are wines that reward both curiosity and generous pours.
1. Brampton Roxton Black Cabernet Sauvignon
Nose: Layers of cassis, blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco leaf and dark chocolate with subtle hints of dried herbs.
Palate: Rich and classically structured with concentrated dark fruit, polished tannins and beautifully integrated oak. A Cabernet that delivers power without shouting about it.
Food Pairing: Beef fillet, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, venison pie or mature cheddar.
Winter Moment: The roast has just come out the oven, the Springboks are winning, and someone confidently declares they’ll “only have one glass.” History suggests otherwise.
2. Craven Wines First Vineyard Syrah
Nose: Blackberry, blueberry, cracked black pepper, violets and gentle smoky spice.
Palate: Fresh, elegant and beautifully restrained, allowing bright fruit and savoury complexity to shine through. Proof that Syrah doesn’t need to be oversized to make an impression.
Food Pairing: Braaied lamb chops, mushroom risotto, duck breast or pepper-crusted steak.
Winter Moment: Rain taps gently on the windows while the fire quietly does its job and nobody is in any rush to leave.
3. Thorne & Daughters Copper Pot Pinot Noir
Nose: Wild cherry, raspberry, cranberry and subtle earthy notes with delicate floral perfume.
Palate: Silky and refined with vibrant red fruit, gentle spice and beautifully balanced acidity. Graceful, expressive and endlessly drinkable.
Food Pairing: Roast duck, grilled salmon, mushroom pasta or truffle-infused dishes.
Winter Moment: One of those unexpectedly sunny July lunches where dessert is cancelled because another bottle seems like the more sensible decision.
4. Stettyn Family Vineyards Shackleton Grenache
Nose: Red berries, wild strawberries, rose petals and hints of white pepper and Mediterranean herbs.
Palate: Juicy, bright and wonderfully approachable with soft tannins, vibrant fruit and refreshing elegance.
Food Pairing: Wood-fired pizza, charcuterie, roast chicken or herb-roasted vegetables.
Winter Moment: The bottle that’s quietly empty before anyone notices because everyone kept helping themselves “just one more splash.”
5. Swerwer Red Blend
Nose: Blackberry, plum, liquorice and baking spice layered with savoury complexity.
Palate: Generous and expressive with ripe dark fruit, supple tannins and plenty of personality. Modern South African winemaking at its adventurous best.
Food Pairing: Slow-cooked beef brisket, braaied ribs, rich pasta dishes or smoky barbecue.
Winter Moment: The stories have become better with every refill. Whether they’ve become more accurate is another matter entirely.
6. Groot Constantia Lady of Abundance
Nose: Blackcurrant, ripe plum, cedarwood and subtle graphite with hints of vanilla and spice.
Palate: Full-bodied and beautifully composed, combining dark fruit richness with refined tannins and a long, elegant finish.
Food Pairing: Roast beef, lamb shank, mature cheeses or hearty winter casseroles.
Winter Moment: The final bottle opened after dinner, when nobody is checking the time anymore and someone suggests planning the next gathering before this one has even ended.
